Pretty early on you get a spell that lets you teleport to any town you've already been to. Being able to fast forward while grinding definitely helps, you will be grinding a lot in this game and can find yourself in over your head pretty quickly if you try to enter new dungeons under-leveled. The only way to reset the skill count is sleeping at an Inn or finding a regen spot. As you level, the amount of times you can cast a skill will continue to rise. Magic use "TP" that runs out like mana, and your skills can only be used a certain amount of times before they run out. You get magic and skills on top of regular attacks. It's a truly forward thinking presentation and I wonder why more JRPG's of this era didn't copy the technique.īattle system and gameplay are fun, pretty straight forward JRPG fare with slight twists.
It's not just heads with text, as the character talks you'll see the action play out behind them, frame by frame. Cutscenes are also done REALLY well, they use comic book like panels that add so much to each interaction. The enemy designs are awesome and they do a great job with scaling, making some enemies seem truly huge, especially bosses. Graphically the game looks great, it's a sci-fi setting with pixels that pop and fun environments.
I've never played a Genesis RPG and wanted to give this a shot since I've had the Genesis collection for a while now. I say that because I don't think I could have stuck through this game if I had to play it w/out those cheats. I'll start by saying I played it on Switch with the Genesis collection and was able to fast forward, quick save and rewind, so my experience is based purely on that version, not the original.
